My Favorite TV Shows! A top 10 list!!
So...something random about me is that I love online lists. If there is an article listing random things on the MSN home page, I will read it. "10 ways to save money!" "Top 50 movies of all time!" "15 reasons to visit Detroit!" I devour them all, so tonight because I am extremely exhausted and should be in bed I am going to post a list. (Also, please forgive my poor grammar)
Last night I asked my husband "If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only watch 3 TV shows for the rest of your life what would they be?" He had a hard time coming up with an answer, but I have thought a lot about it and I am going to post for you not only my 3, but also my Top 10 favorite TV shows of all time!
Kirsten's Top 10 Favorite TV Shows of All Time (and why):
(Only the top 3 are in order, the rest are just in the top 10)
1) Dark Shadows (1966-1971) - Obviously this is my #1. The reasoning behind this relates to an on online article that I read once that discussed that there are only so many story lines and Hollywood is constantly reusing them in different forms. This is very apparent in Dark Shadows, this show ran daily for about 4 years and in their own way they covered many different classic stories/story lines. Boy meets girl and falls in love; Love triangle; Woman Scorned; Time-Travel and a Murder Mystery. Specific stories they used included but were not limited to: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier; Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte; The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas; the Crucible by Arthur Miller; Cask of Amotillado, the Premature Burial and The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe; The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, The Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and Pygmalion. If this was the only show that I had to watch I would be just fine as it covers so much material.
2) It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005-present) - This show just makes me laugh, really hard. I can watch it over and over again. If I am in a bad mood, it puts me in a good mood. It is about a group of unstable friends who own and operate a bar in South Philadelphia, and the poor souls who have the pleasure of coming into contact with them. This show is like Seinfeld meets South Park, the characters are basically sociopaths like the Seinfeld characters; however they are foul mouthed and dirty like the South Park characters.
3) That 70's Show (1998-2006) - I love to watch this show over and over again before I fall asleep. Not only is it about the 70's but really the high school/late teens experience. It is relevant to anyone who went to high school in the Midwest, regardless of the generation. Also, this show launched the careers of actors who went on to be in many popular movies and TV shows.
4) Arrested Development (2003-?) - This show became very popular due to a large cult following after it was cancelled by Fox. To be honest, I was in college during most of the time it was on the air so I didn't see it for the first time until 2007 or 2008, and I have watched it over and over since. The only problem with this show is the Netflix revival; I was so stoked when it first came back for a fourth season on Netflix, but the fourth season didn't do a great job picking up where they left off. The format of the fourth season was so different that I feel that they lost the essence of what made the show great. Maybe the main problem was that a show shot in a continuous format can't be put down and picked up 5 years later, people are older and the momentum they had was lost.
5) Flight of the Conchords (2007-2009) - Another cult classic, if you don't know about this show I strongly suggest you start binge watching. Flight of the Conchords is similar to Garfunkel and Oates as they are a real-life comedic singing duo. This show has them living in New York City and trying to make it big, they have one fan (the amazing Kristen Schaal) and an ineffectual band manager.
6) The Golden Girls (1985-1992) - This show is very popular among women my age (early 30's), I think the reasoning for this is that it first ran when we were children and we remember it being on TV. When we grew up we understood the jokes, and they are funny. I remember walking down the hallway of my Freshman college dorm and I heard the Golden Girls theme song more often than any other show (including Friends and Dawson's Creek, which were also popular back then).
7) South Park (1997-present) - This show was very popular when I was in High School/College. I really started watching it in College and I was hooked. At the surface this show is gross bathroom humor but if you pay attention many episodes have real messages. I feel that the first 10 seasons or so of this show were the best and now it is mostly current events and bathroom humor, but the fact they are still on the air shows the real deep down quality of the show.
8) True Blood (2008-2014) - Alexander Skarsgard
9) The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) - I love this show because it scares the crap out of you without the gore that people our age are unfortunately very used to. My husband and I like to watch this show together and try and guess what the twist will be, and there is always a twist.
10) Batman (1966-1968) - This show reminds me of coming home daily from morning Kindergarten and watching the reruns on WGN. It makes me feel like a kid again, when the scariest thing in my life was Cesar Romero as the Joker. Watching it as an adult, I recognize the crazy campy-ness of the show, but I love it just the same.
Shows that are so close but didn't quite make the cut -
Game of Thrones (2011-present)
The Big Bang Theory (2007-present)
The Simpsons (1989-present) I stopped watching this about 1-2 years ago as it has become too political
Family Guy (1999-present)
Parks and Recreation (2009-2015)
The Office (2005-2013)
I hope you enjoyed my list, it is completely opinion based and I know I probably forgot some great ones, but these are the 10 that stand out and I could watch over and over.
