I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
I have been around a lot of Christmas music this year and frankly I love it. I could listen to Christmas music all year long, but I don't love every Christmas song. One in particular that I don't really like is I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Up until about 2 years ago I thought this song was about a woman who was so loose she even kissed Santa Claus, then a friend informed me that Santa Claus was the Dad. I felt so foolish, of course it is the dad and this is not a song from the 1950's about a slutty mom. I was always so baffled until someone pointed out what was obvious to everyone but me. So tonight's blog post is about my favorite Christmas songs.
1) O Holy Night (any version): This is my favorite Christmas song of all time. My favorite part of Christmas is going to Church and the whole congregation is signing this beautiful carol and holding a candle. To me this is what Heaven will be like, singing praises to God in candlelight with friends and family. This year the verse "a thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices" has hit me hard. We are all looking for light in this dark world. The world does seem so weary right now with horrible crimes being committed and innocents dying, this is a great song of praise and hope.
2) Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Judy Garland version): Meet me in St. Louis is one of my favorite movie musicals ever made and the scene where Judy Garland sings this to Margaret O'Brien is touching and sweet. This song encapsulates everything about the Christmas season and it leaves me with a warm happy feeling.
3) Little Drummer Boy (Mercy Me): I didn't used to be a fan of this song until I really listened to it. When you are in Church and have a hymnal in front of you, you don't focus on the words. When I heard this version I really understood it, it is about the joy of the birth of Christ and how he came for us. The poor boy gave him all he had and even though what we have isn't enough, we are enough with Christ.
4) The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (Pentatonix): They do an a cappella version of this song that is incredible! Listen to it! One of the best songs I have ever heard. Their version of Joy to the World is also amazing!
5) Baby it's Cold Outside: This song is just fun, whether it is a recently recorded version or one done 50 years ago it still has that same sassy, sexy, fun feel. It is just a great song and makes you want to cuddle up under a blanket with your sweetie and drink hot chocolate. The only negative of this song is that it gives off a sexual assault vibe. That is unfortunate.
6) I'll be Home for Christmas: I actually can't put my finger on why I like this song. The words and feelings behind them are almost like a memory that I don't have. I find it is sad yet wonderful all at the same time. I feel too much!! I feel too much!!
7) God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, What Child is this? and O Come, O Come Emmanuel: These three songs I just love to sing out loud. I feel that they are great songs of praise and I look forward each year to singing them, just like #1.
8) Fur Elise: This song is sweet, sad and beautiful. It has no lyrics but still touches you in the same way as the most beautiful love song.
9) Charlie Brown Christmas (Vince Guaraldi): The entire score! I don't think anyone can hear it and not instantly recognize it and conjure memories of happy Christmases of yesterday.
Sorry about the over usage of exclamation points, I am tired and really love Christmas music.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Love, Kirsten
