Spoilers, La La Land and Life..
I love Spoilers. Whether it is a book, t.v. show or movie, I want to know what I am getting myself into. Growing up I would always read the last page or two of a book and I never understood why, especially since the last page you are dealing with different characters and situations than the first page.
Before I agree to see any movie, I find myself going to the spoiler websites and read the synopsis of the entire movie, my justification for this is that it is a money saver.
Why? There have been countless times I have gone to see a movie and I have left the theater disappointed that I wasted the $10 and two hours of my life. I find that knowing what is going to happen makes the whole experience better for me. It doesn't bother me knowing and I like to see how it all unfolds.
Just in case you have ever wondered why spoiler sites exist, it is for people like me.
My most recent example of a spoiler making the movie experience better for me was La La Land.
I know La La Land came out a while ago and you have probably seen it, gotten angry at the ending and moved on, but I'm going to bring it back up for a minute. Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, my family got on the subject of the movie La La Land, of the 5 people in the room who had seen it the majority was disappointed by the ending. My favorite part of the movie was the ending, I actually fast forwarded about 15 minutes in the middle of the movie as it got slow for me and I was a bit bored. While watching the movie, I posted on Facebook what I was doing and a friend from College made a comment about the ending, so I got on a spoiler website read the ending and finished the movie. I think the movie would have been ruined for me if I hadn't gone on that website, I would have gotten too invested in the love story and wouldn't have seen the bigger picture and point of the movie.
**La La Land spoilers coming**
In the last 15 minutes of the movie, you see that even though the movie turned into a love story, both Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) had other loves, acting and jazz. At the turning point of the movie you see Mia's dreams coming true, she becomes the big time actress that she was trying to be and Sebastian owns a successful jazz club. They part ways throughout this time. Mia marries, has a child and is on a date night with her husband when she enters a club, not knowing it is Sebastian's until she recognizes the logo that she had designed. Sebastian sees her, sits on the piano and plays the tune that we have come to recognize as their tune throughout the movie.
**Picture me on the couch sobbing like a baby**
We then see a montage on how things could've been different, we see Mia and Sebastian together and how the last 10 years may have been. After the montage they look at each other with a knowing look, it could have been different but it wasn't and that is ok. It kills me in the best way. The message is clear, we have all been at a crossroad in our lives and made a choice. We could have lived a thousand other lives, but we all must follow our hearts and dreams, and if you do that your choice is never wrong. I can see how people may not have liked it, but it ruins me (in the best way).
In conclusion, it doesn't always hurt to spoil a movie, when you know the ending sometimes it makes the journey that much better.
Oh and watch La La Land!!
